Hello!
My name is Mikaela Roque. I'm a creative and fashion design student based in Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
My love for fashion and culture is rooted in my childhood interest in fine arts, photography, and music — I always felt the need to capture the beauty that would find me. At a young age, I discovered the magic of sewing when my grandmother visited from the Philippines. Turning a limp piece of fabric into something beautiful and purposeful enchanted me. As I grew older, my interest in drawing, photography, and music, evolved into my interest in digital media and dance. I discovered a new world and I learned to paint a picture using sound, imagery, and movement.
To capture a story through a photo, an act, a sound; to express through the way we dress; to create something which holds our innermost feelings, connecting with people in indescribable ways — it's this that draws me to what I love most.
To create is a joy. It's way to tell a story, a way to come together and find community. Everyone on this earth lives their own story. We could never comprehend the intricacies unique to one's own; we are bound to our own path. Although we could never know the experiences of another, when we share our creations and stories — we catch a glimmer of the unique lives outside of our own world.
